Sabin Vaccine InstituteThe mission of the Sabin Vaccine Institute is to actively reduce human suffering from infectious and neglected tropical diseases by providing greater access to vaccines and essential medicines and through programs of vaccine research, development and advocacy. The Institute is dedicated to carrying on the vision and work of one of the preeminent figures in the history of medicine, Dr. Albert B. Sabin. Best known as the developer of the oral polio vaccine, Dr. Sabin's life was not only an unending quest for scientific excellence in the service of humanity, but also a tireless campaign against poverty and ignorance. It was in this spirit that his family and friends founded the Sabin Vaccine Institute. Sabin's medical research and development (R&D) agenda is led by the Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Because R&D by itself is not sufficient to create worldwide impact, the Institute's advocacy initiatives include:
In addition, Sabin advocates on behalf of vaccine safety and for improved immunization rates, nationally and internationally. The Institute also is home to the Cancer Vaccine Consortium. Many of these activities are conducted in collaboration with its academic partner, The George Washington University.
