Institutional Coordination
The Sustainable Immunization Financing program is built on the belief that by working
together, national and interagency partners can establish fiscally sustainable
immunization programs in 15 of the largest and poorest countries in Africa and Asia. This goal is ambitious, but it is not unprecedented. This model of collective action has been at work over the last 25 years in the
Americas Region, where diverse stakeholders came together to eradicate polio
and measles. Today a host of international donors work with developing
countries on their immunization systems. All national immunization systems
receiving GAVI support adhere to the strategic principles outlined in the
WHO/UNICEF “Global
Immunization Vision and Strategy”, a firm statement of their commitment to
technical excellence. In each country, the GAVI partners and key government and
civil society institutions have formed an inter-agency coordinating committee
(ICC). Together they elaborate and execute annual work plans as part of their comprehensive
Multi-Year Plans for Immunization. The Sustainable Immunization Financing program and its program officers
serve as agents within this framework, working with the ICC and individual
institutions to increase immunization funding. |
